Tour Itinerary

Departure time: 6:30 AM

The transfer to the Borovets resort takes around 1:30 hours. On arrival we sort our packs, run through what lies ahead and make our way to the lift.

Stage 1: Yastrebets lift - Musala hut ~ 1:00 h / ~ + 70 m / ~ 3.5 km

We ride the lift up to Yastrebets hut, a journey of about 25 minutes. Stepping off at the top station, our path to Musala hut begins. We follow the summer waymarking and after roughly an hour reach Musala hut, where we take a short tea break.

Stage 2: Musala hut - the Sphinx - Irechek Peak -Musala hut ~ 3:30 h / ~+ 440; ~-440 m / ~ 6 km

With our energy topped up we start the main part of the day. First comes the climb to the rock formation known as the Sphinx, and from there we head for Irechek. The path from Musala hut to the Sphinx alternates between dwarf pine, scree and boulders. This is the section where we gain the most height over the shortest distance. Reaching the rock formation, we continue south along the ridge towards the saddle between Studeniya Chal and Irechek. Beyond it we cross a narrower stretch of ridge that leads us to the summit pyramid. On top we can rest and take in the views over the whole Musala horseshoe and the lakes beneath it. On the way back to the hut, if we have the time and conditions are right, we can also nip across to Deno peak.
