This weekend we head for the southern part of the longest ridge in the Rhodopes, the Veliyshko-Videnishki range. Waiting for us there are conifer and beech forest, small border villages, clean air and the calm that comes off beautiful country. We will climb the highest peak in the area, Kartala, and marvel at the staggering view from the top of the restored border tower - 20 metres high, offering a 360-degree panorama over the surrounding forest. We will have the chance to photograph the beautiful bends of the Buynovska river, to reach the sources of the river Vacha and to visit the picturesque little village of Vodni Pad. And not least, we will enjoy the famous Rhodope hospitality in the village of Kozhari.

Tour Itinerary
7:00 - We leave the Vasil Levski stadium for the village of Kozhari, where we will stay at a welcoming guest house. The transfer takes about 4:00 hours. Once we have arrived and settled in, we gather to discuss the plan for what lies ahead and to hold the obligatory briefing.
Walk: Kozhari village – Kartala peak – Kozhari village ~ 5:00 h / ~ + 500 m / ~ 15 km
Our walk begins at a small fish farm before the village. The route starts on a dirt track and then becomes a waymarked path. One of the interesting things we will notice is the inversion in the altitudes at which the conifer and the beech forest grow. On reaching the summit we will be able to look around through a full 360 degrees from the panoramic tower.
Walk: Kozhari village – the sources of the Vacha – Vodni Pad village – Kozhari village ~ 6:00 h / ~ + 500 m / ~ 15 km.
After we have risen and enjoyed a Rhodope breakfast, we sort out our packs and set off for the sources of the Vacha. Ahead of us is a circular route that lets us immerse ourselves in the ancient forests of the Rhodopes.
A generous breakfast, of the kind only the Rhodopes lay on, and then departure for the Yagodina cave.
