🧭 We spend two days in the Pirin mountains, just before autumn arrives.
⛰️ Todorka is a giant with a woman's name. Legend tells of a local girl called Todorka who could not persuade her father to give her in marriage to her beloved Vasilaki. Todorka left her father's house and climbed the high peak. When she reached the top she began to weep, and from her tears the two lakes known as Todorka's Eyes appeared. On the other side of the Banderitsa valley rises a proud four-sided pyramid, Muratov peak, one of the finest viewpoints in Pirin.
One weekend, three summits, lakes and breathtaking views.
Tour Itinerary
Departure from the Vasil Levski stadium at 6:30.
On the first day of our programme we arrive at Vihren hut, run through the day and check equipment. After a 15-minute meeting we set off along the path towards Zhabeshkoto lake in the Banderitsa valley. Views open around us towards Muratov peak, the rocky edge of Donchovi Karauli, and Banderishki Chukar. From the hut to Zhabeshkoto lake takes about an hour and a half. At the lake we refill our water bottles, since there are no lakes or streams between there and the summit. Then the steeper climb begins, on a switchbacking path to the Todorina Porta col. From there we follow the ridge to Malka Todorka, at 2,712 metres. East and below the summit lie the two lakes of Todorka's Eyes, and to the west rise the giants of Pirin's marble ridge, Vihren and Kutelo. We continue along the ridge to our final goal, Todorka peak (2,746 m). After a short rest on top we turn back.
🥾 Ascent and descent: 774 m ⬆️; 774 m ⬇️
Total time 6-7 hours
On the Sunday we climb Muratov peak, 2,669 m high. Our starting point is Vihren hut (1,972 m). At 8 o'clock we leave the hut on a picturesque path in the valley of the river Banderitsa, which runs down it. The first stage of the walk, to Muratovo lake, takes around 45 minutes. From there we head for the next point. Pirin has many porti - gates that allow passage across rocky traverses — and we reach one of them, the Banderitsa Gate. It is an hour from the lake, and another 45 minutes to the summit. The landscape from Muratov peak is beyond description: lakes, gates, scree, summits, and close by rises the second-highest peak in Bulgaria, Vihren. After a short rest we head back to Vihren hut, a return of about two and a half hours.
