The mountain of the gods - that is Olympus. Legend has it that the gods lived here, led by Zeus, mightiest of the sons of Kronos. Down on earth storms and wars rage, people grow old and die, but here on Olympus peace and stillness reign. Olympus is an enduring symbol of Greek culture and part of the world's cultural heritage. In 1938 it was declared Greece's first nature reserve, in 1981 a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and in 2021 a national park by presidential decree. Mytikas (2,917 m) is the highest point of the massif and the second-highest summit on the Balkan peninsula. We invite you on a three-day adventure to the throne of Zeus and the goddess Hera.
IMPORTANT!
This programme suits hikers with solid summer mountain experience and very good physical condition. Mytikas is climbed in a single day, which means around 1,300 metres of ascent. The climb is not suitable for anyone with a fear of heights.
Tour Highlights
- The ascent of Mytikas (2,918 m), the summit of Olympus
- The ascent of Skolio (2,911 m) and Skala (2,866 m)
- A visit to the waterfalls of Edessa
Tour Itinerary
After another hour and a half or so, and 540 metres of ascent, we reach the first summit of the day, Skolio (2,905 m). Again we take a longer rest, to gather strength for the final push to Mytikas.
Next comes the neighbouring summit of Skala (2,882 m), where the most interesting and most technical part of the day begins - the climb to Mytikas (2,918 m). The walk takes around 8 hours excluding breaks. It calls for summer mountain experience and real stamina. Total ascent for the day is about 1,300 metres, over roughly 15-16 kilometres. On the way back, if the group still has the legs and the appetite for it, we can add another summit.
In the evening we toast the peak in a local taverna.
Breakfast, then on to the waterfalls of Edessa. Edessa is home to the largest waterfall in Greece, the Edessaios or Karanos, where the water thunders down a full 70 metres.
