Our walk begins along the valley of the Cherna river and leads to the welcoming, hospitable Eho hut. Here we can rest and take in the remarkable panorama that opens before us. Tour Itinerary
Departure at 06:30 from the car park in front of the Vasil Levski stadium in Sofia. The transfer to the Ostrikite area takes around 2 hours. On arrival we sort our packs, run through what lies ahead and set off along the route.
Stage 1: Ostrikite - Eho hut - Kavladan peak
~ 5:00 h / ~ +950 m ~ -50 m / ~ 8.5 km
Our walk begins along the valley of the Cherna river, through the beech forests of the third-largest reserve in Central Balkan National Park - Tsarichina. The path climbs at a gently rising gradient until the point where we leave the riverbed and head for the ridge - the section that is sure to make us sweat. On reaching the ridge we follow it, traversing below Kavladan peak to reach the hut. A rest and a good lunch await. In the evening, before sunset, we set off for Kavladan peak to enjoy the last rays of the day.
Totals for the day:
Duration ~ 5:00 - 6:00 hours
Distance ~ 8-9 km
Ascent and descent ~ +950 m / -50 m
Today there is no early start - once we have slept in, we have breakfast while enjoying the view from the hut towards the Vezhen massif. Then we take only what we need and set off for Yumruka peak, which offers a rather interesting climb, using the steel cable on its northern slope. On reaching the summit we have time for a rest and photographs, with the main Balkan ridge spread out before us. Before heading back we can write a message and leave it in the box on the summit. Then we return to the hut for lunch, collect the luggage we left there and head back to the transport.
Totals for the day:
Duration ~ 9:00 hours
Distance ~ 9 km
Ascent and descent ~ +150 m / -1,050 m
