The Kopren Waterfalls and Kopren Peak – Balkan

The Kopren Waterfalls and Kopren Peak

+2

The Kopren waterfalls lie in the Chiprovtsi mountains, part of the western Balkan Range, close to the peak of the same name. Durshin Skok, Lanzhin Skok and Golemiya Skok are not tall waterfalls, but they are all the more beautiful for it. They are scattered at different points across the area, and their drops range between 5 and 20 metres.
We spend the night at Zhar hut. About the hut itself: it stands at 921 m in the Mantegova Chuka area. It was established in 1972 under the name Yavor. These days the hut has been refurbished and welcomes guests again, with 4 double rooms, 3 triple rooms, 2 quadruple rooms and 2 shared dormitories with 16 single beds in total. All the bedrooms have their own bathroom. A night costs 45 leva including breakfast.

Tour Itinerary

We set off for the Oreshkova Chuka area, where Kopren hut stands at 950 m. After the obligatory briefing and an equipment check we take the path running past the valley of the river Milina and, walking in the deep shade of the forest, reach our first point of the day after about an hour - the Lanzhin Skok waterfall, at 1,170 m. Here we have time for a rest and photographs.
Once we have enjoyed the beauty of the waterfall, the climb proper to Kopren peak begins. It rises to 1,964.4 m, which makes it the fifth highest in the Chiprovtsi mountains. Setting off up a steep slope we climb onto the ridge that leads to the summit. The ascent from the waterfall to the top is 794 m. On the summit we have time to enjoy the beauty spread out before us and to recharge. Then we head back to the hut. At the guide's discretion we may take a different route, which opens up superb views. We arrive back at our starting point, visit the Lanzhin Skok waterfall, and transfer to our accommodation at Zhar hut.
