Tour Itinerary
The transfer to Vihren hut takes around 3 hours.
Our climb begins on a stony path winding gently up in switchbacks through low dwarf pine. Before long we reach a distinctive junction, from which we head towards the Premkata col, the Great Cauldron and the imposing north face of Vihren. We continue on a path that runs to the side of the Dzhamdzhiev ridge and enters the raw but exceptionally beautiful cirque of the Great Cauldron, striking for its sheer scale. There is a permanent snowfield here, even at the height of summer. Chamois are often visible on the steep slopes, and a careful eye may pick out edelweiss. After a short rest and time for photographs we begin the more serious climb to Premkata, the col between Vihren and Kutelo. From here the route turns alpine - in several places we need our hands for balance, and on the steepest sections a fixed metal chain secures the passage. Once on the summit our effort is repaid with an extraordinary panorama: the blue calm of the Vlahini and Banderitsa lakes, the marble ridge running towards Pirin peak, and an endless succession of summits along the horizon.
We start the descent down the southern slope of Vihren, on a broad switchbacking path leading to the Kabata area. From here we leave the main ridge and drop into the valley of the Eltepska river, over gently sloping ground that brings us back to Vihren hut.
