A one-day hike to Sivrikaya, the Sharp Rock of Eastern Rila: a 1150 m climb through conifer forest to a panorama of Ibar and Belmeken. Sivrikaya (1972 m) is a little-known peak in the Ibar section of Rila, well away from the crowded trails. We climb steep forest paths past the cosy Venetitsa hut and come out above the trees, with the high ridge of Eastern Rila in front of us. Although the whole route follows forest paths, the 1150 m of ascent and the steep sections call for a very good level of fitness.

Tour Itinerary
We leave Sofia early and reach the Sveti Spas holiday area above Dolna Banya in about an hour and a half. For the first two kilometres the trail climbs gently through the forest, then it steepens and, about an hour and a half from the start, brings us to Venetitsa hut (~1340 m), tucked into a clearing among the conifers. We take a break here. From the hut we keep climbing on forest paths past the Echemitsite area. The ascent is steady and steep in places, and the forest gradually thins out. A path leads right to the summit of Sivrikaya, with views to Ibar and Belmeken. After a rest on top we descend the same way to Sveti Spas, where the bus takes us back to Sofia in the evening.
