Polezhan and Gazey - a Circuit through the Heart of Pirin – Pirin

Polezhan and Gazey - a Circuit through the Heart of Pirin

+2

A one-day circular route from Bezbog hut to the summits of Polezhan and Gazey in Pirin - for hikers in good condition with an appetite for granite giants and high mountain lakes.

The route links the fourth-highest peak in Pirin with the less visited but striking Gazey, which hangs above some of the highest lakes in Bulgaria. Along the way we add Malak Polezhan - the ninth-highest summit in the country - before closing the circuit through the Dzhangal Gate and the cirque of Popovo lake. A walk for those who want long panoramas and a true Pirin ridge underfoot.

Tour Itinerary

From Bezbog hut we set off past Bezbozhko lake and begin the climb up the so-called dushevadka, the soul-taker - a steep but short section that quickly brings us onto the ridge. We turn right off the waymarking towards the col between Bezbog and Polezhan, from where the whole route opens up before us. The ascent of Polezhan (2,851 m) is stony and technical, especially in its upper part, where we follow cairns.

From Polezhan we drop to the col towards Malak Polezhan, and from there a side ridge takes us to the sharp granite cone of Gazey (2,756 m) - a short but steep climb of 20-30 minutes, with stunning views over the Gazey cirque, Damata s Koka (the Upper Gazey lake) and the Valyavishki lakes. We come back and add Malak Polezhan (2,822 m), then descend to the Dzhangal Gate, cross into the cirque of Popovo lake and pick up the main yellow-and-green path back to Bezbog hut.
