A one-day ascent of Pirin peak (2,593 m) - one of the least visited summits in the Pirin range, away from the busy tourist routes. The route leads through belts of dwarf pine and a lakeless cirque to the lonely granite summit of northern Pirin, where the summit book keeps the names of the few who have got this far.

Tour Itinerary
We set off from the Kulinoto locality (1,290 m), at the foot of the ski run near Predela - the boundary point between Rila and Pirin. For the first kilometres we walk a dirt forest road that gradually introduces us to the character of this rarely trodden ground. Soon the road gives way to a path that joins the waymarked route coming from the Predel hut.
Higher up the terrain changes noticeably. The dwarf pine - the eternal guard of Pirin - closes in on both sides of the path, and the height gained begins to tell with every step. We pass the last water source on the route - it is worth refilling here - and continue towards the lakeless cirque below the summit. Silent, raw and almost without trace of human presence, the cirque is one of those places where the mountain looks real.
From the cirque we climb a grassy gully that brings us out onto the ridge. From here only the last metres to the summit remain - steep, but short. On Pirin peak (2,593 m) we are met by a panorama taking in the northern Pirin crest and the distant massifs of Rila. We descend by the same route back to Kulinoto.
