Winter on Mechit Peak - a One-Day Ascent – Rila

Winter on Mechit Peak - a One-Day Ascent

+4

Invite yourself to a real winter adventure in the heart of Rila. Golyam Mechit peak (2,567 m) is striking for its panoramic view towards Musala, Malyovitsa and the whole Rila crest. Climbing it in winter is a challenge that combines snowy beauty, silence and the feeling of conquering the „north-eastern guard“ of Rila.
The route suits hillwalkers in good physical condition with basic experience of winter walking. The day will give us both a sporting workload and unforgettable views of the snow-covered peaks of Rila.

Tour Itinerary

The transfer to the village of Govedartsi takes about 1 hour 20 minutes.

After a briefing and safety instruction we shoulder our packs and set off for the first objective of the day, the Mechit hut. After a short pause we are onto the main part of the route. Moving in the open now, we have the chance to admire the winter scenery that opens up around us. And then, almost without noticing, we are on Malak Mechit. A short photo stop and tea from the flasks. We continue at a brisk pace towards the summit. Following the pole waymarks we reach Golyam Mechit at 2,568 m almost before we know it.
Photographs, smiles and admirable views. There is no beauty quite like it. We allow plenty of time to rest and take pictures, and then head back. If the group is going well, we may have time for good food and a glass of wine at a local tavern.
