Lyubash is the highest summit of the range that shares its name, in western Bulgaria, reaching 1,399 m. The Lyubash mountains form part of the Ruy-Verila chain and also appear on the list of the country's 39 mountain ranges.
The route we take to the summit starts from the village of Lilyantsi; the waymarked path, with red markings, begins just past the church. There is no water along the route itself. The ground is a mix of earth and stone, though the softer surface predominates on this side. There are no dangerous sections.
The programme suits active people in good condition who are new to mountain walking.
Difficulty: beginner hikers in good physical condition. Ascent: +400 m

Tour Itinerary
Stage 1: 15-20 minutes, 109 m of ascent, 420 m distance.
The waymarked path starts just past the village church, crossing the bridge over the river Klisura on the right-hand side of the road, and runs along the northern slope of the peak. The altitude here is 926 m. Five minutes along the path we reach a dirt road, which we cross, keeping left along the red waymarks. Almost immediately after that we enter a small wood with a slightly stony section. Coming out of it, we can take our first short break on a panoramic meadow. We are now at 1,035 m.
A 15-minute break to change layers, drink and so on.
Stage 2: 45 minutes, 245 m of ascent, 930 m distance. After the short break we carry straight on up the path, which before long brings us to a second small wood to cross. Coming out of it we find ourselves on the second panoramic meadow, from which the path to Mali Lyubash also sets off. From here the view opens ever wider towards Strazha peak and Mali Lyubash, while in the distance the summit pyramid of Dragovski Kamik (1,118 m) begins to show - known in this area as the Tran Matterhorn. This is a good place to stop for our first panoramic photographs before continuing along the path, which soon brings us to the start of the ridge section. Reaching this point we can take our second break and top up with food and water for the final stretch. A 15-minute break to change layers, drink and so on.
Stage 3: 25 minutes, 119 m of ascent, 530 m distance.
On the last stage the path follows the ridge to the summit. There are stony sections in places, which we can either skirt or cross without difficulty. There are no dangerous areas. On the summit we can enjoy a 360-degree view. To the north-west, neighbouring Strazha peak (1,388 m) stands fully revealed, and in the same direction we can now take in the Tran Matterhorn in its full glory. The view east is not to be missed either, opening up Vitosha. In clear weather the eye reaches as far as Rila, to the south.
