Koteshki Chal is a rarely visited rock ridge in Northern Pirin, running along an airy, serrated crest to Dunino Kuche peak - one day, for advanced hikers only.

We start from the Peshterite locality, enter the cirque of Banski Suhodol and climb Dunino Kuche (2469 m). From there we head south along the crest of the Kotechkoto ridge to Banski Suhodol peak (2884 m), then descend via the Koncheto traverse path and the Kazanite to Vihren hut. A one-way traverse of the massif, off the waymarked paths, with short technical passages and extraordinary views all day long.

Tour Itinerary

Departure time: 5:00 AM

We leave early from the car park at the Peshterite locality - ideally before sunrise, so that we are on the ridge by midday. From the cars we cross the river and follow a dirt forest road west; after a short loop we turn south and enter the valley below the cirque of Banski Suhodol. The first kilometres run through coniferous forest - shaded and pleasant for warming up before the dry, rocky ground higher up. The path loses its waymarking as we enter the cirque proper: the terrain steepens sharply, the forest falls away behind us, and the huge amphitheatre of Banski Suhodol, sealed in by rock walls, opens ahead. The climb through the cirque is the longest and physically hardest effort of the day - no shade, with the height gain building steadily all the way to Dunino Kuche peak (2469 m). Over 4 km we have to overcome close to 1100 metres of ascent.
On the summit we stop for a longer break, food and water - and for the first time we see the whole Kotechkoto ridge, drawn out to the south like a narrow stone spine between two cirques. We turn onto it: the start is a broad, easy crest, but after ten minutes or so of walking the slopes on either side close in sharply. We continue along the narrowed crest to the junction point on the main ridge, and from there a final, gentler climb takes us to Banski Suhodol peak (2884 m).
From Banski Suhodol the descent begins: along the traversing path below Koncheto, then down through the cirque of the Kazanite - past the foot of Vihren's North Face - to our final destination, Vihren hut (1972 m), where the transport is waiting.
