Organized or own

A one-day hike to Klikach Peak (1,383 m) in Bulgaria’s Vlahina Mountain, with views across Rila, Pirin and Vitosha and a centuries-old pear tree.

We set out from the scattered hamlets of Gorno Leshko near Blagoevgrad and follow old dirt tracks through oak woods and open pasture to a superb and seldom-visited viewpoint. On a clear day more than ten mountain ranges fill the horizon, from Vitosha and Rila across Pirin to Slavyanka and Kadiytsa, the highest summit of the Vlahina. On the way down we stop at Marina’s Pear, a tree centuries old with a trunk more than 5 m around, which villagers hold to be the oldest pear tree in Bulgaria.

Tour Itinerary

Departure time: 6:30 AM

We leave Sofia early and take the Struma motorway south to Blagoevgrad, then climb a narrow paved road into the hills to the village of Gorno Leshko.

In Gorno Leshko we fill our bottles at the village fountain, the only water on the route. From there a dirt track leads up to the hamlet of Prikrat and climbs steadily above pastures and stands of oak. It contours beneath Tsarmolin Peak, opens onto a broad meadow on the saddle, and runs on below the eastern shoulder of Klikach. The final half kilometre is a steep footpath straight up to the summit (1,383 m).

On a clear day the view takes in Vitosha, Rila, Pirin, Slavyanka and Osogovo, with Kadiytsa (Ogreyak), the highest peak of the Vlahina, close at hand. Far below lie Logodazh reservoir and the town of Blagoevgrad. We rest and have a packed lunch on the top.

We descend the way we came, and near the bottom take a footpath above the village reservoir - the locals call it the Gyola - to Marina’s Pear. Villagers put the tree at 300 years old at the very least; its trunk measures over 5 m around and it still bears fruit. The meadow around it looks out once more to Rila and Pirin. From here it is a short walk back to the village centre. On the drive out, just past Dolno Leshko, we make a short stop at the Church of St Archangel Michael, set on a rise above the road; the inscription over the door dates it to 1816. The church opens only on major feast days, so we see it from the outside before heading home to Sofia.
