Golyama Syutkya - the Wild Forests of the Batak Section – Rhodope

Golyama Syutkya - the Wild Forests of the Batak Section

An ascent of Golyama Syutkya (2,186 m), the third-highest summit in the Rhodopes and the highest point of the Batak section. A walk through the deep coniferous forests of the western Rhodopes, with beautiful mountain meadows and panoramas towards Rila and Pirin.

Golyama Syutkya is a peak the path carries you to slowly and with dignity - not with abrupt crags and exposed edges, but with dense spruce forest, quiet meadows and the sense that the mountain here lives by its own rules. An ancient wolf trail runs along the main ridge, and the forests around the summit hold the largest gathering of deer in the western Rhodopes. Nature here has never bent to people, and you feel it at every step.

Tour Itinerary

Our starting point is the village of Rakitovo. The climb has a steady rhythm - forest, clearing, forest - with brief emergences onto open meadows that open views over the endless green of the Rhodopes and the distant silhouettes of Rila and Pirin.

Shortly before the summit we enter denser coniferous growth on a barely visible path. We come out at a wooden shelter - a sure sign we are in the right place. A little higher stand the summit cairn and a gazebo with a table and benches. The summit itself does not offer a 360-degree view, but the space around it is quiet and secluded — exactly what a Rhodope summit ought to be.
