Strashnoto and Yonchevo are two of the most beautiful lakes in Rila, tucked into the Malyovitsa part of the range. Lying at 2,465 m and 2,013 m above sea level respectively, they open up magnificent views of the sharp peaks that surround them. Their names are bound up with the painter Hristo Yonchev - Kriskarets, celebrated for his Rila landscapes. Our route takes us to precisely these two lakes before we head for our final objective, the highest peak of the Malyovitsa range, Golyam Kupen. The climb promises challenges, but also incomparable panoramic views over the raw beauty of Rila.

Tour Itinerary
The transfer to the Malyovitsa mountaineering school takes approximately 1:30 hours. On arrival we sort out our packs, go over what lies ahead and set off along the route.
Our walk begins in the wooded section along the Razhdavitsa ridge, after which we cross the Gorna Preka Reka river and climb onto the Gyolechitsa ridge. Our way continues through a stretch of dwarf pine, just before we reach Yonchevo lake, where we take a short break to gather strength for the final climb to Strashnoto lake. Along the way we cross a small stony river. On reaching the shelter of the same name we will have time to rest and enjoy the alpine scenery. Then comes the main objective of the day - the ascent of the highest peak of the Malyovitsa range, Golyam Kupen. For anyone who would rather not climb it, there will be the chance to sunbathe beside the lake.
The return route heads west, passes through the cirque of the Malomalyovishki lakes and follows the course of the Malka Malyovitsa river, bringing us directly to the Malyovitsa hut. From there we continue to the mountaineering school car park.
