Dzhangal Peak - One Day – Pirin

Dzhangal Peak - One Day NEW

+4

The ascent of Dzhangal from Bezbog hut is one of the most demanding one-day trekking adventures in Pirin, combining a rarely walked wild path above Popovo lake with the classic descent through the Dzhangal Gate. This route suits only very experienced hikers in good physical condition with experience of difficult mountain terrain. Setting off early from Bezbog hut, the route passes the crystal-clear Popovo lake before entering exceptionally steep and wildly beautiful ground with no official waymarking. The climb demands concentration, a sure step and a steady pace - the route has to be completed within the day to catch the last lift down from Bezbog at 16:30. The reward is a panorama from 2,730 m towards Vihren, Kutelo, Polezhan and the dozens of Pirin lakes scattered like mirrors below the peaks.

Tour Itinerary

The route starts from Bezbog hut (2,236 m), reached by chairlift from Gotse Delchev hut near Dobrinishte. An early start is essential - the pace over the whole route has to be steady, with no unnecessary stops.
From the hut the path heads towards Popovo lake over well-waymarked ground. Popovo lake - one of the deepest glacial lakes in Pirin - is the natural boundary beyond which the route changes completely. Here the official waymarking ends and the wild begins.

Beyond the lake we take a rarely walked, unmarked path that climbs exceptionally steeply over rock and moraine, with no landmarks other than the summit above us. This section is what sets the route apart from the standard walks in Pirin and turns it into a genuine test - here Dzhangal shows its true character: raw, granite and uncompromising.

On the summit (2,730 m) a stunning 360-degree panorama opens out - the Pirin giants Vihren and Kutelo, the massifs of Malak and Golyam Polezhan, the Valyavishki, Samodivski and Banski lakes, and on a clear day Rila in the distance.

The descent goes through the Dzhangal Gate. From the gate the route returns to Bezbog hut on a familiar path. The time for the descent has to be calculated carefully - the last lift leaves at 16:30 and does not wait.
