A Winter Sunrise from Botev Peak, by way of the Ravnets Massif – Balkan

A Winter Sunrise from Botev Peak, by way of the Ravnets Massif

+4

The Balkan range is known for its harsh character and suddenly changing weather, and its highest peak - Botev - fully justifies that reputation. Which is exactly why climbing it in winter is both a challenge and a kind of magic. Over the two days we will cross the beautiful Ravnets massif, feel the force of the wind along the ridge and immerse ourselves in the true winter atmosphere of the Balkan. Our objective: magnificent Botev peak, the highest point of the range.

Tour Itinerary

The transfer to Karlovo takes about 2:30 hours.

On arrival we prepare our packs and, after the obligatory briefing, set off for the „Ravnets“ hut. The path to it is known for its serious gradient and unrelenting climb. On reaching the hut we take a short break, and then get back to „work“. We head along the Golesh ridge, which brings us to the „Bulkata“ locality - a place from which a panorama opens over the whole alpine crest of the Balkan range, from Ambaritsa to Botev. From there we continue to the „Dyuza“ locality, after which the second big climb of the day awaits: the winter route up Zhaltets peak. Once on the ridge, all that remains is a walk along Mlechniya Chal and Bezimenen, and shortly afterwards our host for the night appears - the Botev shelter.

Today, by tradition, we rise early - the aim is to climb Botev before sunrise. If the weather is with us, we will witness an extraordinary natural spectacle. We then return to the shelter, where we will have breakfast, pack up and set off back along the long way to the „Ravnets“ hut, and from there to Karlovo.
