Sredna Gora is among the larger but often underrated ranges in Bulgaria. Its highest summit, Bogdan, is hidden within the forest belt and offers no panoramic view of its own, but the way there runs along beautiful ridge paths. From them we enjoy views towards the Balkan Range, Rila and, in clear weather, even Botev peak. A spring route combining the quiet of the forest with the wide horizons of Sredna Gora.
Tour Itinerary
The transfer to the trailhead, a little beyond the town of Koprivshtitsa, takes around 2 hours.
Our climb begins gently along an open ridge with beautiful views towards Vitosha and Rila. Our first stop is Kretsul peak (1,303 m), from which broad panoramas open towards the main Balkan ridge. We carry on along the ridge and pass Bogdan hut, which is currently closed. After a short but steeper climb we step onto Bogdan peak (1,604 m), the highest point of Sredna Gora. We take photographs and rest on a panoramic meadow nearby.
If we wish, we can extend the walk to Shiligarka peak, the second-highest in the range and one of the finest viewpoints in the area.
On the way back a pleasant walk through Revival-era Koprivshtitsa awaits, where we have lunch and close the day with the spirit and comfort of another age.
