There are places in the mountains that are not simply walked - they are lived. One of them is the Balkan Koncheto: a narrow, wildly beautiful stretch of ridge between the peaks of Papa (1,976 m) and Bratanitsa (1,992 m) in the Central Balkan. You stand on the crest of the range, on the invisible border between northern and southern Bulgaria, with a boundless horizon on either side. Below you, ancient beech forest, picturesque meadows and the wild gorge of the Vartopska river. Above you, only the sky.
The route suits moderately experienced and experienced hillwalkers in good physical condition with experience in the mountains.

Tour Itinerary
We set off for Koprivshtitsa. The transfer to the starting point takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. The route is circular and starts from the little chapel on the sub-Balkan road at the turning for Koprivshtitsa. The climb follows the waymarked path past the Vartop narrows and their rock wonders, crosses the broad subalpine meadows of Vartopa and comes out onto the main crest of the range. Then comes the unforgettable crossing of the Koncheto and Bratanitsa peak, the highest point of the day. The descent follows an unmarked but easily passable ridge, which closes the circle back to the starting point.
