A two-day walk in the heart of Rila - along the rocky ridge of the Skakavtsi, a night among the Ribni lakes and the ascent of imposing Yosifitsa.
This is a walk for real hikers: a full day on untrodden paths and rocky ridge, an evening in the cirque of the Ribni lakes and, in the morning, the ascent of one of the most striking summits in Central Rila. We spend the night at the Ribni Ezera hut, between the two lakes of the same name, in a cirque ringed by Kanarata, Yosifitsa and Kyoravitsa.

Tour Itinerary
We set off from the Tiha Rila station and climb straight away towards Marinkovitsa peak. From here the ridge runs north - we cross Vazela peak and Draganitsa peak before reaching the first goal of the day: Golyam Skakavets (2,685 m). The whole section beyond Draganitsa has no path and almost no waymarking - you navigate by the shape of the ground and by occasional cairns. The terrain is stony, with stretches of dwarf pine in places, and slippery in wet weather. From Golyam Skakavets, if the group is going well, we continue to the neighbouring Sreden and Malak Skakavets. We then return along the ridge to where it meets the waymarked path between Ribni Ezera hut and Kobilino Branishte, and descend to the hut, which stands between the Lower and Upper Ribno lakes.
In the morning we leave the hut on switchbacks up to the ridge above the cirque of the Ribni lakes - the view back over the two lakes grows with every step. The path loses itself in grassy and stony ground, and the last metres before the summit of Yosifitsa call for extra care. From the top a panorama opens towards Kanarata, Pavlev peak, Kyoravitsa, Shishkovitsa and the Zhandarmite. We return to Tiha Rila, where the group set out.
