Kadiitsa peak (1,924 m) - the highest point of the Vlahina mountains — in a one-day adventure along the border with North Macedonia, together with a visit to the Komatini Rocks.
Vlahina is the ninth-highest range in Bulgaria: wild, unspoilt and seldom visited. Its position on the border has kept the landscape much as it has always been, and the views from the crest take in Rila, Pirin, Slavyanka, Belasitsa, Ograzhden and Osogovo - a panorama worth the trip for any hiker after something away from the well-trodden routes.

Tour Itinerary
Our route starts from Brestovo, a scattered mountain village in the Simitli municipality of the Blagoevgrad region, spread across the slopes of Vlahina at 904 m. Right at the start we get our first sight of the Komatini Rocks - an imposing rock wall up to 100 m high, formed of Palaeogene conglomerates more than 35-40 million years old. We save those for the end of the day. Packs on, and we set off for our main goal: Kadiitsa peak.
From Brestovo we follow forest paths through the dense broadleaf woods typical of these parts. Up to around 1,600 m we walk among beech forest, after which the ground opens out into subalpine pasture and panoramic clearings. We navigate by GPS track, as there is no waymarking over most of the route.
Our goal is Kadiitsa (1,924 m) - officially Ogreyak, though local people have kept the older, more romantic name. It is the highest point of Vlahina, the ninth-highest range in Bulgaria. The state border between Bulgaria and North Macedonia runs along the crest, and a border pyramid stands right beside the summit marker. The view stops you in your tracks: the whole of south-western Bulgaria spreads out below, with Rila, Pirin, Osogovo, Ograzhden, Belasitsa and the Macedonian mountains picked out in the distance.
After a spell on the summit we return by the same route to Brestovo. With the walk behind us we take our time over the Komatini Rocks - a close look at the rock wall, and the local legends of the region's outlaw past.
