Kozya Stena peak stands in the Troyan mountains, part of the Central Balkan Range. It rises to 1,670 m west of the Troyan pass and forms part of the popular Kom-Emine route. This is a classic walk along the Balkan ridge - open, with gentle rises and falls and spacious views in every direction.
Tour Itinerary
The transfer to Beklemeto takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. On arrival we sort our packs, run through what lies ahead and set off along the route.
The walk itself divides into 3 stages:
Stage 1: Beklemeto - the airmen's monument ~ 1:00 hour
This section is roughly 3.5 km long. At the very start we take a broad dirt road, which after 15-20 minutes becomes a well-trodden path. This is also the junction where the path splits into a winter and a summer route. We take the summer route, which traverses below the peak opposite.
Stage 2: the airmen's monument - the Vetroviti Preslap saddle ~ 2:00 hours
Once past the airmen's monument, Kozya Stena itself comes into view. Here again we choose between the winter and summer paths. The winter one follows the ridge and opens the superb views we have heard so much about, while the summer one traverses below the summits ahead. It is worth noting that taking the winter path makes the walk harder, with more height to gain. The route is secured with a steel cable and continues to the neighbouring summits of Boba and Kucheto. The distance is again roughly 3 km.
Stage 3: the Vetroviti Preslap saddle - Kozya Stena hut ~ 0:45 hours
This is the easiest part of the walk, a descent to the hut and time for lunch and a longer rest. Distance about 1 km.
