Less than an hour from Sofia rises one of the most familiar peaks of the Western Balkan Range — Mount Murgash. At 1,687 metres, rugged and wind-swept, it offers something few day hikes can deliver: a slice of history, true Balkan wilderness, and views that stay with you. The route from Eleshnitza village is the classic approach — reliable, beautiful, and demanding enough to remind our legs of the effort the following morning.
Tour Itinerary
The hike begins from the Eleshnitza Monastery "Holy Mother of God" — serene and dignified, officially dating back to the 14th century, though its stones carry even older memories. During the Ottoman period, these walls sheltered not only faith, but books, language and identity. A short stop here is more than a rest — it is an encounter with something that has outlasted centuries.
From the monastery, the trail continues upward along the yellow-white markers, entering denser woodland before gradually lifting us above the tree line. The landscape opens up, the air cools, and our feet find their rhythm on the well-worn path. Around 8 kilometres from the start, nestled among broad-leafed trees, Murgash Hut welcomes us — the natural resting point before the final ascent. This is where we drink our coffee, refill our water bottles, and give our legs one last pep talk before the summit push.
The final stretch from the hut follows red-white markers — steep, exposed and windy. This is where Murgash reveals its character. The wind picks up, the terrain opens wide, and with every step the horizon grows. At the very top stands the meteorological station, in continuous operation since 1953 — a quiet witness to the thousands who have made this same climb. The view from the summit is the reward — wide, open, and well earned after every kilometre we've covered.
