Samothrace is among the most mystical and striking of the Greek islands, combining the wild beauty of mountains, thick forest, crystal-clear waterfalls and ancient sanctuaries. This small but singular corner of the Aegean is known not only for its breathtaking scenery but for its deep history - it was here that the celebrated statue of the Winged Victory of Samothrace was found, today one of the great treasures of the Louvre.
Our adventure takes us to this magical island, where we immerse ourselves in its landscapes, climb its highest point - Fengari - cool off in turquoise waterfalls and settle into the traditional Greek way of things.

Tour Itinerary
Departure is set by the ferry timetable, and confirmed a month in advance. We leave from the Vasil Levski stadium for Alexandroupoli in Greece, expecting to arrive around midday for a quick bite and a short walk. Then we board the ferry to Samothrace. The crossing takes about an hour and 45 minutes - time to rest, take photographs and enjoy the sea. On arrival a short transfer brings us to Therma, where we settle into a welcoming guest house. The evening is free — a good dinner at a taverna and a well-earned rest before the adventures ahead.
After breakfast we shoulder our packs and set off on a new adventure. Today brings an easy walk through the island's green depths, where we find hidden waterfalls and clear pools, perfect for cooling off. In the afternoon we return to the hotel, eat at our leisure and pick up our beach things, because a beautiful wild beach is waiting for a proper unwind. If we are in the mood for more and the weather is with us, we can take a boat out towards evening. We will watch a magical sunset over the island and see the striking Kremasto Nero waterfall. The evening is free — dinner at a taverna, and overnight.
Today brings the big challenge - the ascent of Fengari, the highest point on Samothrace. At 1,611 metres, and starting almost from sea level, this is a serious walk but an unforgettable one. After an early, substantial breakfast we kit up and set off. The path begins among greenery, but before long we are gaining height and the views around us grow steadily more impressive. We come out onto panoramic ridges and rocky crests, from where the Aegean reveals itself in its full glory. With a final effort we reach the summit, and the view takes the breath away: the islands of Thasos, Limnos and Imbros, and in the distance the great bulk of Athos. Here we take a well-earned rest, eat, and put the moment on camera. Once we have taken our fill of the panorama we start the long descent. We are back at the hotel by late afternoon, with time to freshen up and relax. In the evening we celebrate a successful trek with a traditional dinner, good local specialities and a glass of cold wine or beer in an authentic Greek taverna.
After an unhurried morning and a good breakfast we pack, leave the hotel and board the bus. Today belongs to the history and culture of Samothrace - we visit the capital, Chora, wander its narrow streets and look round the fortress. There is time for lunch, after which we head for the port, say goodbye to the island from the ferry and cross back to Alexandroupoli. From there we carry on by bus to Bulgaria, full of memories from our island adventure.
